The impact the repentance “Only the image of God is man” makes on David’s community is huge. They believe that any being that wasn’t formed exactly how God “meant” to form them, even though they looked human, was not human and was a blasphemy against God. The community rejects all difference in people. They believe that these different people were sent from the devil and that they should be put to death.

This repentance is shown in the everyday Sunday preach of the “Definition of Man”. It states that any being who did not have the normal amount of features and who had even the slightest difference from the definition was a deviation and hateful in the eyes of God. Some of these Deviations lived in the Fringes, shunned and despised by the “humans” because they were “inhuman”. Sophie’s extra toe would be viewed as a deviation, and therefore, following this repentance, she would be inhuman and a blasphemy against God.

I have not seen this in action in my life because in our society, people are mostly accepting towards people who are different. In our society, even double-headed twins, such as Abigail and Brittany, are accepted as people who are different. In the community, this would be viewed as diabolical and horrific.

If this repentance was seen daily in my life, I believe that I will go completely mad. I value myself as a person who accepts everyone for what they are, and if this was to be enforced upon my life, my values would have to change drastically and I would certainly be unwilling to do so. I would also take this somewhat literally and imagine that every human being much look exactly like one another.

I predict that this would be a huge part of the book, and Sophie would be impacted greatly because of it. Sophie’s sixth toe would make her “inhuman”, as claimed by this repentance and she will surely face hardships from the people, who believe strongly in this repentance. Sophie’s mother said, “If anyone were to find out, they'd -- they'd be terribly unkind to her. We've got to see that that never happens.” This would be because of the repentance and Sophie would have to face a group of people who intends to destroy this blasphemy.
